SUP Racing with OluKai in Maui

This upcoming weekend, the 15th and the 16th of May, OluKai is inviting surfers and stand up paddle boarders of any age and talent (as well as beach bums and sun bathers) to come out and join Ho’olaule’a, “A Celebration of the Ocean and the Cultures that Surround it” at Kanaha Beach Park in Maui. Each day will be packed with either one-person outrigger canoe or stand up paddleboard races, a luau, sailing canoe rides, games and a free concert by John Cruz.

The SUP and OC-1 races will take participants through “the downwater,” a legendary 8-mile stretch from Maliko Gulch to the Lae ‘Ula O Kai Canoe Club at Kanaha Beach on Maui’s North shore. The SUP race will start at 11 a.m. on Saturday and the OC-1 race will being at 11 a.m. Sunday. Racers in either event can register online (elite pay $100 entry fee/recreational pay $50 entry fee). A $15,000 prize bag will be shared equally between the men’s and women’s division of each racing discipline (OC-1 and SUP).

If you’re less into water sports and more into beach fun, consider going Saturday evening for a Luau dinner (served from 3-6). The dinner cost is $10 (free with the registration fee for competitors). Whether you participate in the race or hang out on the beach, the second annual Ho’olaule’a is bound to be an awesome event.
