REI is known for both outfitting its customers with great outdoor gear and inspiring them to get out and experience adventure first hand. That said, it’s no surprise that the national co-op is partnering with the National Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS) and its Wilderness Medicine Institute (WMI) to provide Wilderness First Aid courses at REI stores around the country.
The two-day courses will begin in June and will be taught by WMI instructors and REI Outdoor School instructors who have been WMI certified. Participants will take part in both classroom presentations and hands-on scenarios including: how to administer first-aid in the wilderness; the Patient Assessment System; and how to handle a variety of injuries–from hypothermia to spinal cord injuries, as well as shock and wound management.
John Gans, executive director of NOLS says, “We are proud to team up with REI to share our proven training courses with outdoor adventure enthusiasts across the country. It is imperative that anyone who recreates in the outdoors understand how to assess and treat injuries, and we are delighted to have the opportunity to share this knowledge on such a broad scale through REI’s Outdoor School.”
