For most of us, to climb Mt. Everest would be an extraordinary accomplishment, but imagine scaling the mountain at the ripe young age of thirteen. For anyone who doubts the possibility of reaching this goal at such a young age, think again: On Saturday, 13-year-old Jordan Romero from Big Bear Lake, California became the youngest person to scale Mt. Everest, the world’s tallest peak.
The eighth grader confirmed by satellite phone on Saturday (Himalayan time) that his climbing group, which included his father and three Sherpa guides, had reached the 29,035-foot summit.
Romero took the northern route out of Tibet–a perilous route that claims many climber’s lives every year. Romero’s climb moves him closer to completing his quest to summit the tallest mountains on every continent, The Seven Summits. He adds Mt. Everest to a list that already boasts Mt. Kilimanjaro, Mt. Kosciuszko, Mt. Elbrus, Mt. Aconcagua, Mt. Denali and Carstensz Pyramid. Romero plans to climb the 16,067-foot-tall Vinson Massif in Antartica, the last of the seven summits, in December.
