Just over a year ago, nude hiking made the news after Appenzell, Switzerland took a stand against the practice. After what seemed to be an invasion of the naked Germans, the community passed a law that banned hiking in the buff. Violators were to be fined.
For what appears to be the first time since the creation of the legislation, naked hiking in Appenzell has made a few headlines again. This time, a fined hiker has appealed his case, and according to BBC News, it is likely to make it to Switzerland’s highest court.
Said hiker was spotted after strolling beside a barbecuing area in the buff. The people of Appenzell—which is definitely a conservative village considering that women have only had the right to vote since 1990—complained after seeing him in his birthday suit from a Christian care home.
While authorities considered the law to be a way to get these naked hikers out of their canton, the legitimacy of the legislation is up to debate. According to Swiss federal law, nudity is not a crime, and after doing his research, the hiker appeared in the appeals court this week. BBC News noted that he was fully dressed this time.
