Born in New Orleans, Louisiana, Malcolm John “Mac” Rebennack, Jr., better known by the stage name Dr. John, is an American singer/songwriter, pianist and guitarist whose music combines blues, pop, jazz, Zydeco, boogie woogie and rock and roll to create his own brand of “voodoo” music.
Dr. John began his professional music career in the 1950s and continues to be a force in the music scene thanks to his music’s timelessness. His lovable growly voice accompanied by piano, bass and other rhythmic arrangements are reasons why the artist’s fans never grow tired of listening to his albums again and again. His newest album, Tribal, is a collaboration with The Lower 9-11 that gets back to his early R&B sound with an updated, humorous feel.
Whether you’re listening to Dr. John’s music from past decades or present, the sound is upbeat, funky and soulful and makes you want to hop on a flight. Next stop? New Orleans.
