Lokua Kanza’s newest album, “Nkolo,” directly translated means “God.” And although the musician’s tracks are undeniably and wholeheartedly spiritual, there’s a lot more to his music than that. The talented singer/songwriter Kanza drew from various inspirations for this album, released just a few months ago, including aspects of his native Congolese culture and tongue, Lingala, as well as traditional African sounds derived from his father’s village and “ndombolo,” Congolese dance music. Kanza, who today lives primarily in Brazil, sings in three different languages on his album–Lingala, Portuguese and French. And in doing so, creates a subtle cross-cultural compilation in his album that transcends musical and cultural boundaries. Bluntly put, Nkolo is a peaceful, melodious album that lends itself to anyone who appreciates beautiful, dynamic music .
