Colorado Republican gubernatorial candidate, Dan Maes, has developed a fascinating new theory in attempt to slander his opponent, Denver Mayor John Hickenlooper. Maes is warning voters that any support for Hickenlooper’s policies—particularly boosting bicycle ridership—builds  foundation for “converting Denver into a United Nations community.”

Maes held a rally in Centennial last week, where he promised the 50 attendees that Hickenlooper’s attempts may be disguised now but will soon be exposed. While he once considered the efforts to promote a cleaner and healthier environment to be well-meaning, Maes said later, he now realizes that’s what Hickenlooper wants everyone to think.

According to the Denver Post, Maes has asserted that efforts to promote bicycling—such as Denver’s B-Cycle  renting program, which boasts 400 bicycles parked around the city—are not “just warm, fuzzy ideas from the mayor. These are very specific strategies that are dictated to us by the United Nations program that mayors have signed on to.”

The now-considered-crazy-by-most conspiracy theorist was alluding to Denver’s membership to International Council of Local Environmental Initiatives (ICLEI), an international alliance dedicated to sustainable development, with members in over 1,200 communities, 600 of which are in the United States.

Denver has been a member of ICLEI since 1992. Hickelooper was elected mayor in 2003. In addition, a spokesman for the mayor considers communication with the ICLEI to be limited.

But this is not enough for Maes. While he has admitted that some may find his theories to be “kooky,” he still fears the worst.

“At first, I thought, ‘Gosh, public transportation, what’s wrong with that, and what’s wrong with people parking their cars and riding their bikes? And what’s wrong with incentives for green cars?’ But if you do your homework and research, you realize ICLEI is part of a greater strategy to rein in American cities under a United Nations treaty,” Maes told the Denver Post.
