One of the best things about the time of year when most of the leaves have fallen and the temperature is starting to drop—that transition between fall and winter—is the fog. In the city, the tops of skyscrapers hide behind misty clouds, and in the country, barns and silos appear to be illusions through the sea of fog.

Autumn is, by far, my favorite season of the year. Admittedly, the kind of autumn I’m talking about doesn’t happen everywhere in the world—sorry to those folks that live so close to the equator. But because it is one of the four weather seasons, I feel justified in choosing it as a theme.

Not only is fall part of the season of cyclocross, it also contains some of the best holidays. For these reasons alone, this should be everyone’s favorite season (in my opinion). So sit back, sip your hot apple cider, and prepare to take a golden red visual journey of Autumn, ‘Round the World.

Rain, rain, rain. Since we’re based in the Pacific Northwest we figured we should dedicate the final photo for the October Friday Photo contest to the weather element for which our autumns are so well known. Michael Sulis snapped this great shot of a single leaf getting drenched by fall rains which certainly captures the essence of the season.

Fall is a bitter-sweet season for cyclists in Oregon. The air is cold on the nose but crisp in the lungs. Changing leaves illuminate back-country highways, creating dreamy opportunities for touring. But every orange or yellow leaf is a sign of the impending dreariness of the fog and rain of winter, which looms just around the corner.

This weekend I grabbed my bike and a pair of gloves and found some lazy highways to explore. More pictures from my trip (including Oregon’s bridge to nowhere) after the jump.

But swimming salmon are hard to capture on camera, so it was back to the fall colors of the trail.

Looking to take that perfect picture of fall foliage? The U.S. Forest Service has a hotline with weekly updates on fall foliage color changes in national forests throughout the nation.

The toll-free ‘Fall Color Hotline’ can be reached at (800) 354-4595. The automated voice system is updated weekly with information about peak fall foliage colors in various regions throughout the country. The hotline, which is in its 16th year of service, will continue to operate through the middle of November, or as long as there is significant fall color in our national forests.

Since it’s mid-October, it was decided that we needed to show off the fall colors that we have been enjoying here in Oregon. Taken last weekend at the Narrows Wayside in Douglas County during our photo shoot for the Holiday issue Survival Kit, this shot by Anna Brones shows just why we love Oregon autumn: the Umpqua River rushes through the quiet canyon, the colors are vibrant and there’s just enough nip in the air to remind you that colder months are coming.

It’s officially September and that means fall is upon us (equinox is the 22nd of this month). Although long summer days will soon be a thing of the past, we can get excited about changing colors, mild weather and of course weekend forest hikes. This photo, taken by our intern Kyle Cassidy, screams a good Pacific Northwest fall hike. Shot near Quartz Creek in the Gifford Pinchot National Forest near Mount St. Helens, the trees in this photo certainly are epic. Makes you want to get out of work early this afternoon and take advantage of the first fall weekend doesn’t it?
