A diverse group of environmental organizations all working in concert under the coalition SaveOurEnvironment has submitted a 391 page report to the incoming Obama administration titled, “Transition To Green” outlining things Obama can do in the first 100 days (and beyond) of his tenure to jump start the green economy and clean up the bloody hell mess of environmental policy that the US has been subjected to for the past 8 years. Â Â
The report highlights several ideas for shifting policy to focus on a green agenda. Â Overall, the recommendations aren’t a real shocker if you’ve been paying attention to science for the past 20 years. Included in the report are proposals to cap the gases emitted that cause global warming, base policy on that science (WOW, WHAT A CONCEPT!), take a cautious approach to energy development on federal lands (Polar Bears listen up), protect oceans, stop nuclear, and extend the moratorium on offshore oil drilling. Â Â
Perhaps the most exciting aspect of this report is that we’re seeing a sea change in environmental NGO attitude on how to deal with government. Â Perhaps they’re sick of getting the crap kicked out of them on enviro policy during the Bush years, the members of this coalition are full court press offensively, revitalized by the new pro environmental gains in Congress and the Whitehouse. Â Let’s hope this groundswell of inspiration to exact change in US enviro policy actually has some substantive results. Â I know I’m ready.
