Outdoor retailer bigwig Recreation Equipment Inc — known as REI to most of us — certainly does its part for the environment. The company believes in the use of solar power, has a couple of green prototype stores, supports carbon netural travel for its adventure trips, uses the ecoSensitive label to highlight products which have high recycled and/or organic content and was a founding member of the Outdoor Industry Eco Working Group.
Now REI has taken another step to show the company’s commitment to sustainability, by signing on to become a member of bluesign. From now on, the REI design team will be using the bluesign standard to help make more informed textile supply chain choices, from the choice of yarns and dyes to production facilities.
This is a good move for REI as it will provide greater supply chain transparency — meaning they’ll know exactly what fabrics and manufacturers they’re using, and what the environmental impact of those really is — which is just another step in the company’s pledge to inspire and educate people for a lifetime of environmental stewardship.
