Timberland Mountain Athletics

With all the characteristics that active people expect from their performance shoes (stability, cushion, support, etc.), coming up with an eco-friendly design is easier said than done. But there are several key components that can help with a shoe’s footprint, and the new Timberland Mountain Athletics line is a prime example.

We give Timberland props for incorporating a fair amount of recycled materials into the shoes that debut this fall. Here’s a quick rundown:

  • Combination 70% recycled PET upper, 50% recycled PET lining and synthetic materials
  • Speed 100% recycled PET laces

The other main feature of the TMA line is Timberland’s development of Green Rubber. The outsole rubber is made with 42% recycled tire crumb, keeping tires out of landfill, a good move considering it takes them over 80 years to decompose. The new Green Rubber will also be used in Timberland’s Earthkeepers line.

Timberland is highly committed to environmental stewardship, and the new TMA line is only part of that commitment. Back in 2007 the company developed its Green Index, a way of measuring product’s environmental impact in regards to climate impact, chemical usage and resource consumption.
