This year travelers at London’s Heathrow Airport will have the opportunity to hail a new, futuristic, kind of taxi cab. Beginning in Spring 2010, passengers will be able to zip to and from Heathrow’s Terminal 5 and its business car parks in environmentally friendly Robot taxis.

These battery-powered taxis, or ‘pods’, can transport up to four passengers and their luggage along a private road network (called a personal rapid transit system) at speeds up to 25mph. The pods are similar to shuttles in that they run on a fixed track. But they can also be individually programmed for specific routes and stops.

These battery-powered robot taxis, which use energy resources equivalent to 200 mpg, are designed to be a more eco-friendly alternative to buses and regular taxis.

American cities that are considering similar systems include: Ithaca, San Jose, Atlanta, and St. Louis.
