American Car Ownership Down by 4,000,000 in 2009

Last year, Americans got rid of four million cars in favor of alternative transportation. That accounts for the largest decline in car ownership since 1960, according to U.S. Department of Transportation records. Some analysts attribute the change to a wide range of factors — the recession, better public transportation systems, traffic, gas prices and concern over global climate change. In addition, many argue that “social networking on the internet or smart phones that is limiting teenagers’ ‘need’ for cars.” Whatever the reasons may be, a decline in America’s car-obsessed culture is a positive thing for society and the environment.
