FDA vs. BPA: It’s Not Illegal Yet

On January 15, the FDA made two grand statements. It (finally) admitted that Bisphenol-A is “concerning.” It also ruled the chemical “safe” for continued use in industrial food packaging (in other words, it’s still legal for use in pretty much any type of food container, can, baby bottle, water bottle, etc.).

Ultimately, the FDA argues that BPA’s dangerous health effects have not had conclusive-enough research to warrant discontinuation, and, therefore, orders more research. In addition, according to the report release, “the FDA is supporting reasonable steps to reduce human exposure to BPA including actions by industry and recommendations to consumers on food preparation.”

But, FDA, I’m curious — How exactly will you “support reasonable steps to reduce human exposure to BPA” while allowing its virtually unlimited use in everyday products?
