In preparation for this summer’s soccer World Cup in South Africa, Nike has developed several national team jerseys that are made from 100 percent recycled plastic. Nike has contracted with fabric suppliers that actually dig discarded plastic bottles out of Taiwanese and Japanese landfills and transform the plastic into perfectly usable yarn.
The jerseys worn in South Africa and sold for retail purposes will contain the equivalent of about 13 million plastic bottles in their fabric, and each individual jersey will have been derived from about eight bottles. The teams that will wear Nike’s recycled jerseys this summer include: Brazil, The Netherlands, Portugal, USA, South Korea, Australia, New Zealand, Serbia and Slovenia.
