At the start of the new year, we asked you to side with Greenpeace and sign a petition urging Trader Joe’s to quit selling red list seafood. Nine months after the petition began, Trader Joe’s has finally agreed to “green up their stores,” by committing to offering only sustainable seafood starting in 2012. From MNN:
“Since Greenpeace started the campaign, Trader Joe’s has stopped selling orange roughy and red snapper — both “red list” fish that environmental groups urge consumers to avoid… To that end, Trader Joe’s will develop greener buying policies and better label its seafood to reflect the exact type of fish, its origin, and catch or production method. With those efforts, Trader Joe’s will likely receive a passing grade in Greenpeace’s next report, Carting Away the Oceans, which rates supermarkets based on sustainable seafood policies.”
