Charge Your Cell Phone Using Heat From Your Feet

wearable technologyThough this eco gadget may sound too absurd to be true, it is no joke. Ecouterre, a website devoted to sustainable fashion design, has recently showcased thermoelectric galoshes that also serve as a charger for your cell phone. Think wearable technology, if you will.

This different kind of hot-stepper, a pair of Wellington boots that converts heat from your feet into electricity and can store enough juice to charge a cellphone, is the result of a collaboration between Orange, a British telecommunications company, and the renewable-energy gurus at Gotwind. Earlier this week, a prototype made its debut at England’s Glastonbury Festival where Orange is the official communications sponsor.

So how do these power wellies work? Thermoelectric modules in the sole convert temperature differences into electric voltage, meaning the hotter your feet get, the more energy you produce. When a sizable charge accumulates simply plug your phone into the power output at the top of the galoshes. How’s that for clean energy?
