The River Seine is an iconic element of Paris’ infrastructure, and it’s now got the potential to become an icon of urban sustainability–if plans to install eight hydroelectric turbines in the waters of the Seine go through this year.
Paris City Hall is currently in the process of seeking proposals for hydro power strategies. Proposals will be accepted through this fall and the winner will be announced in January 2011.
An ecological survey of the waterways has already been conducted and four potential turbine locations have been scouted along the Seine, with plans for installation underneath some of Paris’ bridges– at the Pont du Garigliano, the Pont de la Tournelle, Pont Marie and Pont au Change. If all goes as planned, Paris plans to have the turbines installed early next year.
Although the turbines wouldn’t ultimately generate a great deal of power, they would, ultimately, be cost effective and practical. Additionally, the project would provide a great example of the capabilities of urban hydro power, and would serve as an educational tool for Paris and other cities around the world.
