Yes, the German Autobahn is typically associated with cars, not bikes. And yes, one million cyclists (as well as pedestrians) really overtook it on Sunday, July 18th as a part of an event called “Still-Life,” held to celebrate the Ruhr region of Germany, named the “Cultural Region of Europe” in 2010.
In total, the event brought out three million people, many of whom crowded near various sections of the 37-mile-long collective giant table that spanned the length of the closed-off section of the highway that was comprised of 20 thousand individual tables. A traffic report announced during the festivities warned drivers about the highway closure: “Attention on the A40… There is a 60-kilometer (37-mile) closure between Duisburg and Dortmund due to the longest table in the world.”
This might be the coolest event we’ve ever heard of. And we’re happy to hear that cyclists took advantage of the car-less pavement and hopped on their bikes for a carefree (and carfree) ride.

In the face of the oil shortages world-wide, caused by U.S.A.’s astounding over-consumption, the bicycle and electric cars will gain popularity fast. China has already taken a tack away from oil consumption and has already up and running, nuclear/electricity sourced, electric bullet train networks and the ensuing social structures, manufacturing on veggies and rice, products for the American and World markets – using no oil at all! China’s millions of scooters can easily be converted to rechargeable electric bikes and China builds new reactors at a rate of ten at a time to answer the energy calls of a growing nation! Americans meanwhile wage fruitless wars in dry desert regions for oil they will consume faster than they can find it! Imagine, great fat-assed, air conditioned, Americans trying to survive on a bicycle economy and laugh! They are the “Fatted Calves” for the Asian bar-B-Q’s!
In America, there’s a big fight not to make anymore nuclear reactors because of the nuclear waste and of them leaking. For the past few years there’s been a fight for the nuclear waste to go to Yucca Mt., a place where no one goes and using modern technology to contain it. The leaking ones are the ones that were made awhile ago and need to be fixed up. We’ve relied on these old ones and since newer ones aren’t being built, we’ve never studied and made new technology. I think that newly made nuclear reactors would be great for our (America) energy consumption. With new nuclear energy, we wouldn’t have what’s happening in the gulf right now.
