About Hidden City: NYC Undercover

New York City, by and large, has made its reputation as a place that lets it all hang out: Bright lights, tall buildings, a population of millions that provides every individual resident with a soft blanket of anonymity (and the curiously-freeing ability to vomit in public without anyone really noticing.) But behind all that, there’s a smaller and more secretive city – a less-traveled underbelly where the sidewalk is cracked, the asphalt is crumbling, and tourists rarely stop for a visit. Despite its populousness, New York is still home to hundreds of places that are ignored at best, and at worst, forgotten.

Since moving here six years ago, I’ve made it my business to seek out and explore that city, on foot and by bike, from all angles and at all hours. It’s an ongoing journey. Hidden City is the result.

I am a freelance writer, editor, and illustrator; reluctant renter at a Brooklyn rowhouse; and proud owner a forty-dollar road bike from Craigslist. My hobbies include linoleum printing, beer-drinking, and cycling around New York in a skirt. When I’m not out prowling the boroughs, I write for a variety of print and online outlets and keep a personal blog called Pink India Ink.
